‘Sarawak Kopitiam’ is a new ‘Kopitiam’ offering by SSP, at Kuching airport, in the heart of the Sarawak region in Malaysia and is located at the Arrival Hall (at Level-1) of the Airport.
The design of the unit can be best described as being vibrant, vernacular and trendy with well curated spaces for lasting first impressions. The unit has an eclectic mix of material and design features, with wooden slats, rattan Furniture & Wall finishes, patterned floor tiles, wall art with local flavours etc., all juxtaposed against a bright colour palette, ribbed glass, light cane furniture and metal elements to creating interesting spaces. We have bold & fresh colours for the seating, contrasting with the more sober, counter designs.
The use of planter-boxes adds a softness to the space, while the design pays homage to the Sarawak Region. Similarly, the colour palette is inspired by the Regional /State Bird of Sarawak, the ‘Rhinoceros Hornbill’.
This particular color palette coupled with the ample usage of vernacular fabrics, tiling and artwork, provides contextuality to the space.
The plan for the unit provides a clear zoning of the ‘Front of house’ (FOH) areas (comprising of a customer seating area, a separate hot meal counter/ servery and a beverage counter/ servery), the ‘Back of House’ (BOH) areas, (comprising of a production kitchen and staff offices). In the customer seating area, we have achieved circa 60 covers through a mix of perch, community seating and general dining seating.
The unit has a total spread of circa 2,650 sft area, with 225sft each for the hot meal counter/servery and the beverage counter/ servery, 900 sft for the central customer seating area, 890 sft for the production kitchen and 410 sft for the SSP office space.
The overall design aims to provide the unit with a trendy, energetic & youthful appeal, yet grounded in tradition, mirroring the nature of its clientele while paying homage to the vibrant and rich heritage of Malaysia.
